![]() Given the rod angles near TDC, trig functions here tell the story that small deltas mean large gains. A shorter lead means less of the piston’s approach to TDC is pushing against a burning (expanding) mixture, so less combustion energy is wasted pushing the piston the wrong way and more is used adding power, pushing it in the desired direction. With the exception of outliers like Top Fuel cars, an IC engine delivers maximum performance and efficiency with the least ignition lead. This remains true if we substitute “injectors” and the ICU maps for carburetors and distributor timing. While time spent optimizing the crank, bearings, case, carbs, distributor, providing clean oil, proper valve gear timing and so forth is both necessary and important, all that remains the ‘chorus’ the ‘fat lady’ sings in those chambers. ![]() The combustion chambers of any IC engine are the sources of that engine’s power and efficiency. The intro photo is an '30s aero engine chamber how far we've come! ![]()
